PINDDAAN ,GAYA- PITRIPAKSH
Vayu Purana menntioned that Pitripaksh oblation should consist of” One Pinda on one vedi a day and the last one on the 365 th day”.
However, the ritual, so vividly mentioned in the Purana’s Gaya ‘Mahatmya ‘ chapter has now vanished .
So have the “Pinda Vedis” of which 323 have disappeared with the passage of time and only 42 have been left in Gaya where the pilgrims offer pindas for the salvation of their ancestor’s souls.
Even the remaining vedis face extinction , thanks to weathering and eagle eyes oof land grabbers. Panda’s who help with the rituals say, the vedis have now shrunk the Pitripakash to a fortnight , instead of the year long calendars. Consequently the rituals are completed with the last Pinda on the 15 th day of the mela instead of the last day of the year.
As per the VAYU PURANA texts, the Pinddaan is performed all through the year. The Gaya Shradh originally was a one year ritual that was to be performed on all the 365 vedis, and it was it was mandatory for every Hindu following Sanatan Dharma to follow the norms of Shradh .
The practice of one year long Shradh was prevalent in the Mahabharat period, about 5000 years ago. But with the advent of Kliyuga, the one –years Shradh concept disappeared and one –month Shradh came into practice. Gradually the one-month rituals was later reduced to a fortnight Karmkand and continues till date.
“With the changing socio-economic scenario in the tradition and the culture of the country has also undergone radical change . The fast llife style and increased economic activities have changed the concepts of many rituals in Gaya, the rituals are conducted over a day or a maximum of three days, instead of 15 days. The pilgrims leave after offering Pindaas on a maximum of three Vedis today ”, said A pandit of Gaya who is booked for the 15 days and would ensure performing of the rituals for his clients within the fortnight.
“Some people insist on a single-day ritual that we have to do. But this is not in according with the Gaya shradh chapter of the Vayupurana,” he said.
Another Pandit the organizer of the Ramnuj Math, said “Vayupuran is hardly followed now. But there is some relief in the Purana mandate as it also mentions that a qualified Pandit can curtail the period of Shradh with added rituals that are performed under the guidance of a scholar Pandit.
At present there are only 42 Vedis left in Gaya and the pilgrims choose to go for the rituals at only 16 or 20 of them –all located in the main shrine of VISHNUPAD TEMPLE premises.
Most of the pilgrims however perform shradh at all the remaining 42 Vedis spread over 10 square Kms between PRETSHEELA HILLOCK and the BODHGAYA DHRMARANYA vedi located in the premises of the Mahabodhi Mahavihara. CLICK http://www.yatricar.com/ads/pinddaan-4/
